NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – According to a new global assessment, coordinated efforts to address climate change and air pollution can yield approximately $15 in economic advantages for every $1 invested. The assessment was published on September 7 by the UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It evaluates 25 strategies targeting key sources of emissions and pollutants. This report is described as the first comprehensive global economic analysis of integrated climate and clean air measures.

Projections indicate that these measures could generate annual economic benefits amounting to 2.8% of global GDP by 2035. The share is expected to increase to 4.5% in 2050 and reach 11.4% by 2100 with full implementation. Even excluding non-market welfare gains, the measures are estimated to return roughly $4 for every dollar spent. Additionally, the report warns that each year of delay in implementing these measures could forgo over $1.5 trillion in combined annual benefits.
The 25 identified measures encompass sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. They include initiatives like expanding renewable energy, boosting energy efficiency, promoting cleaner cooking and heating methods, advancing electric vehicles, and tightening vehicle emission standards. Other strategies target oil and gas leaks, routine venting and flaring, fertilizer application, livestock management, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package also advocates for enhanced waste management practices and reductions in hydrofluorocarbons and other climate-affecting pollutants.
Significant economic impacts across key sectors
Air pollution remains a crucial element in economic assessments because of its influence on health and productivity. The assessment links human-caused outdoor air pollution to approximately 6.4 million premature deaths worldwide in 2025. Household air pollution is responsible for an additional estimated 2 million premature deaths, including roughly 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution has also contributed to 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia cases within the same year.
Achieving full implementation of these measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. This figure includes 96 million deaths associated with ambient air pollution. The assessment also forecasts hundreds of millions fewer instances of chronic illness. Compared to the baseline scenario, immediate action could reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by half by 2050, cut methane emissions by 60%, and decrease several major air pollutants by about 70%.
Synergies between climate mitigation and health improvements
The proposed package is projected to limit global warming to about 0.34 degrees Celsius by 2050 and to 1.4 degrees Celsius by 2100. By the end of the century, the scenario indicates that major air pollutants could decline by as much as 85%. The costs associated with implementing these measures amount to roughly 0.7% of global GDP over the next decade, decreasing to approximately 0.5% by 2100. The assessment further suggests that stronger enabling conditions could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.
The UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition released these findings in observance of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The assessment highlights institutional barriers as significant obstacles to broader adoption of existing measures. It estimates that resolving these enabling conditions could generate savings of up to $10 trillion by 2040. Ultimately, the report connects climate policy, air quality, health costs, and productivity within a unified economic framework that encompasses measures already available across major sectors.
