SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is preparing to develop humanoid robots, expanding its artificial intelligence applications from digital screens into tangible, physical entities. CEO Sam Altman confirmed this initiative during Fortune’s Sources podcast, informing host Alyson Shontell that the company will be constructing them. Altman predicted a compelling prototype demo should be ready by 2027. Widespread deployment on public streets remains several years away. The company has not yet revealed the final design or specific functions envisioned for the robot.

Altman emphasized that the most challenging aspect lies in the robot’s brain rather than its physical form. The AI needs to interpret the real world, make decisions, and execute tasks with accuracy. He stated that the robot’s appearance is less critical than the system controlling it. A humanlike shape is preferred because doors, keyboards, and other devices are designed for humans. Altman also indicated that OpenAI intends to build robots in other shapes besides humanoids.
To support this endeavor, OpenAI is recruiting specialists in AI systems and motion control to enhance robots’ interactions with their environments. According to BigGo Finance, there are 27 open robotics positions listed on the company’s careers page. These roles include work in state estimation, actuator control, full-body behavior, and machine learning infrastructure for embodied AI. Job postings highlight efforts in designing mechatronic actuators that integrate motors, transmissions, sensors, and thermal management systems. Additional openings focus on manufacturing and supply chain logistics aimed at scaling production.
From construction sites to personal assistants
The overarching goal is to create versatile robots capable of performing a broad spectrum of tasks. One job listing indicates an initial focus on assisting skilled workers in infrastructure construction. Over time, OpenAI envisions personal robots that support daily activities at home and in everyday life. Altman expressed that everyone should have their own personal robot, though manufacturing capacity must come first. Such machines will need to understand their environment and respond to unexpected situations both efficiently and safely.
This foray into robotics marks a return to a field OpenAI explored several years ago. In 2019, researchers trained a robotic hand to solve a Rubik’s Cube. The team was later disbanded as the company shifted its focus to language models. Its startup fund has supported humanoid robot companies such as 1X and Figure AI. The partnership with Figure AI was terminated in February 2025. Additionally, OpenAI has established a formal process for reporting AI misalignment as its systems advance in capability.
Growing competition in physical AI development
OpenAI joins an expanding list of companies working on humanoid robots. Tesla is developing its Optimus robot, while Figure AI has introduced Figure 03. Chinese automaker XPeng has begun manufacturing its IRON humanoid. Companies such as Samsung and BYD are also involved in humanoid research, according to Ubergizmo. Nvidia has expanded its physical AI efforts with partners worldwide. Altman’s comments suggest that OpenAI plans to compete by emphasizing the intelligence layer that directs the hardware’s operation.
Specific details regarding the 2027 demonstration remain undisclosed. The company has not revealed pricing, launch timelines, or the robot’s final appearance. Initial units are expected to target industrial infrastructure and construction roles, according to Ubergizmo. Altman stated that establishing manufacturing capacity and infrastructure will take precedence over developing personal robots for consumers. The company continues to hire across its robotics division, with full deployment in homes and public settings projected to take several more years.
